Gastric Balloon Placement and Removal Diagrams

The Gastric Balloon Procedure

The soft, durable gastric balloon is placed in your stomach through the mouth to help you eat less and lose weight. After 6 months, the gastric balloon is removed with a similar endoscopic procedure.

Placement and removal of this FDA-approved medical device is performed under a mild sedative at the offices of Hedden & Gunn Plastic Surgery in Birmingham, Alabama. The minimally-invasive procedures usually take only 20 to 30 minutes. Patients are able to go home on the same day.

Placement of the Gastric Balloon

The thin and deflated Orbera Gastric Balloon is first placed in the stomach with an endoscope. The balloon is then filled with saline until it is close to the size of a grapefruit.

Removal of the Gastric Balloon

At 6 months, the gastric balloon is removed through the mouth much the same way in which it was placed. The balloon is first deflated before being removed with the endoscope.
