Hair Restoration at Hedden Plastic Surgery
Birmingham, Alabama Hair Transplants
More than half of men and women in the United States will eventually lose at least some of their hair. Male and female pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, usually starts with a receding hairline and thinning crown for men, while women tend to experience an overall thinning. Advances in plastic surgery have led to hair replacement techniques that are available for people who want to restore growing hair and a more youthful look.
Hair Transplants at our Birmingham, Alabama practice can help you gain a more youthful look with a fuller head of hair. Hair transplant procedures for men and women are a proven way to use existing hair to encourage growth in areas that are balding or beginning to thin. Our Alabama hair transplant surgeons use their skill and artistry to create natural-looking, aesthetically-pleasing results for each patient based on their individual needs and desires for hair restoration.
Our Alabama Hair Transplant center uses the latest state-of-the-art techniques to restore growing hair to balding or thinning areas of the scalp. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), the gold standard for today's hair transplants, involves taking thin strips of hair from donor sites, usually the sides or back of the head. The strips are then dissected into individual follicular units of one to four hairs.
Recipient sites are created with a small instrument and the follicular units are placed into these tiny openings. Nourished by a rich supply of blood vessels, virtually all of the transplants survive for most patients. The transplanted hair follicles will continue to grow new hair — retaining their natural characteristics of color, texture and curl — once they enter a new growth phase. Scars left in the donor areas are virtually undetectable.
Scalp Expansion is a surgical technique used to enlarge the hair-bearing donor area, often to restore areas of hair loss resulting from injury or illness. The donor areas at the sides and back of the head are stretched with tissue expanders over a period of weeks or months prior to surgery. The balding scalp tissue is then surgically removed and the stretched, hair-bearing skin is advanced to replace it.
Scalp Reduction surgically reduces the size of balding areas using donor regions toward the back and sides of the head that are resistant to genetic hair loss. During surgery, flaps of hair-bearing skin are stretched upward to eliminate a bald spot at mid-scalp or on the crown of the head and closed with sutures. Scalp reduction is an option for patients who want to decrease the surface area needed for hair transplants.
Finasteride is an oral, prescription medication used to treat pattern hair loss in men. It has been shown to stop the progression of hair loss and regrow hair in many, but not all, men. This hair restoration option works best for regrowing hair and slowing hair loss among men with early to moderate hair loss on the top of the head.
The HairMax LaserComb is a convenient, non-invasive treatment for hair loss. This hair restoration medical device uses lasers to improve the quality of hair, restore hair to a normal pattern of growth and prevent the further loss of hair. The HairMax LaserComb works by stimulating hair follicles to reverse miniaturization, returning small, fine hairs to healthy hairs that are normal in size. This laser energy has also been shown to stimulate and restore the productivity of dormant hair follicles.
