Body Contouring Calf Implants
Body Contouring Calf Implants
Shapely and Proportionate Legs with Cosmetic Surgery in Birmingham, Alabama
The calf muscles can be some of the most difficult to develop through exercise. If you have had difficulty building up your calves despite years of workouts, Calf Implants may be an option for you. These body contouring implants have shown a large increase in popularity for people who want to achieve more shapely legs and better proportion of the legs to the rest of the body.
Dr. William J. Hedden, Dr. J. Stephen Gunn and Dr. M. Jude LaBarbera in Birmingham, Alabama offer calf augmentation with implants or autologous fat transfer depending on your cosmetic surgery goals and your available body fat. With more shapely and attractive lower leg contours, you may feel more confident wearing shorts, swimwear, skirts or dresses.
Calf Implants Candidates
Calf implants are usually made of solid silicone with a soft feel. Many people choose calf implants because:
- Their calves are not symmetrical.
- Their calves are not well-developed.
- A health condition has reduced musculature in one or both calves.
Your plastic surgeon will help you choose the style of calf implants that will enable you to achieve the best results for calf augmentation with implants.
Calf Implants Procedure
Calf augmentation can be performed using two different surgical techniques — submuscular and subfascial calf augmentation. The calf implants are protected by the body's tissues with both of these techniques.
During Submuscular Calf Augmentation, a pocket is created beneath the muscle that makes up the calf.
With Subfascial Calf Augmentation, a pocket is created within the fascia (the connective tissue that surrounds the muscle).
Calf Implants Incision and Implant Placement
The calf augmentation procedure begins with an incision at the back of the knee. Through this incision, your plastic surgeon forms a pocket for the implant between the fascia and the top of the calf muscle. Sterile calf implants are inserted and carefully positioned to ensure a proper fit within the pocket.
Once your surgeon has verified that the calf implants are placed so that they are symmetric and will produce a natural look, the pocket openings are closed with dissolvable sutures. The skin is closed and bandages are applied for compression and support.
Calf Implant Recovery
You may be required to wear compression stockings for a couple of weeks after your calf augmentation procedure. These garments reduce welling, prevent fluids from building up, improve blood circulation and provide support for your new leg contours as they heal.
Calf augmentation patients can expect some swelling and stiffness in the calves and behind the knees following surgery. Swelling should subside within a couple of weeks. Extended walks and vigourous physical activity should be limited for up to 6 weeks.
Calf Implant Results
Your calves will become softer and look more natural as swelling subsides, producing results that are comfortable and natural-looking. The surrounding tissues will stretch to comfortably accommodate the calf implants over the next few months.
Calf implants are placed so that shifting is unlikely. Scars hidden in the crease behind the knee are difficult to detect and will continue to fade until they are almost imperceptible.
