Scarguard MD at Spa Greystone
Scarguard MD®
is a treatment to reduce the appearance of thick and overgrown scars. It's a liquid containing cortisone, vitamin E and
silicone that forms a clear protective film over a scar.
What is a scar?
When skin is injured our body makes collagen to fill the gap. This collagen is like a uniform cement patch. There are no
pores and sweat glands within this patch, making it look different from the normal surrounding skin. Therefore, to achieve
the most natural look this patch should be as thin as possible. Scarguard helps our skin reduce the thickness of scars.

How long does scar healing take?
It can take as long as one or two years for some scars to fade to their final appearance. In the first three months most
scars appear pink. This is due to an overgrowth of blood vessels within the area, which is intended to help bring a better
blood supply for healing. After healing has completed, these blood vessels usually shrink and the color usually fades. After
that, the remaining scar will slowly shrink if normal healing occurs.

Why are some scars thicker than others?
As skin heals, too much collagen is intentionally made. An enzyme called collagenase melts the extra collagen and the body
tries to leave only what is needed for the repair. If the healing cells do not make enough collagenase, too much collagen is
left. This will result in a thick scar.

Scarguard MD is the only product that we know of that combines silicone, cortisone, and vitamin E into one easy to use

What about scar removal creams and gels?
When your skin is damaged, your body creates collagen that fills in and repairs the cut or wound. While collagen is just
collagen, skin consists of many things such as hair follicles and sweat glands. Similar to the mortar between bricks of a
building, the build-up of collagen between the cut skin will always be different than the surrounding skin. Consequently,
scar removal cream claims don't make sense.

What about scar removal creams that work on all scars — Thick and raised, thin and sunken?
As your body repairs damaged skin by filling in the cut with collagen, it also creates an enzyme, collagenase, that helps
melts away the collagen. When the balance of the two is correct, a relatively flat scar is formed. If the balance is off,
either too little collagen remains and a thin, sunken scar forms; or too much collagen builds up resulting in a thick raised
scar. It's just not possible that the same scar removal cream could build-up a thin, sunken scar while reducing a thick, raised scar.
Scarguard MD works on thick, raised scars, not thin sunken scars. It dramatically reduces the appearance of thick, raised scars.

The Scarguard MD Smell and why it is important!
Scarguard MD has a distinctive odor. This odor is from the antiseptic that acts to cleanse the skin before forming it's
protective coating. Within a short time the smell is completely gone.
